Fiber-reinforced polymer composites combine thermoset
or thermoplastic resins with fiber reinforcement, the resulting
product having substantially different properties than the
individual components.
THERMOPLASTIC
The matrix material of a composite can be a thermoset or a thermoplastic
THERMOSET THERMOPLASTIC
A thermoset is a cross-linked polymer that cannot
be reshaped after it’s formed, cured, and cooled.

Apart from the degree of crystallinity, these polymers vary in their base chemistry, which dictates the surface
energy or cohesive energy density.
The amorphous content of the polymer, which varies from polymer to
polymer, provides the anchor for the interactions occurring at the interface between the rigid plastic substrate
and the TPE.
The chemistry variations of a few of
these polymers are illustrated in Figure 4.

This
formulation also contains the PET process aid
ColorMatrix™ SmartHeat™ RHC.
THE SOLUTION
When added to PET preforms or rPET, ColorMatrix
Optica blue toners and color formulations work to
correct any yellowing or color variation, resulting
in packaging that maintains a neutral or blue color
with improved quality and performance.
Since the formulation also has improved heat
stability, it will not accelerate yellowing during the
recycling process, and will also help reduce energy
consumption and improve bottle mechanical
strength by incorporating all the added benefits
from the SmartHeat RHC technology.
