Again working in tandem, the Mars Otomotiv engineers and Avient’s technical team were able to alter the mold so it could process the thermoplastic in place of aluminum. The thermal dissipative performance of the thermoplastic heat sink is equivalent to that of aluminum – even for the highest-power HB LED model, which provides 27 total watts in nine HB LEDs.

Unlike metal, thermoplastics can also be molded into complex shapes that fit tight spaces. With thermoplastic parts, there is rarely a need for secondary processing steps such as coating, welding, drilling or painting.

Starting with specific performance requirements, Avient’s formulation experts set to work developing several thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) grades that could deliver better productivity and enhanced key properties than the silicone rubber part. Extensive compatibility testing confirmed that the new grades would bond chemically with the engineering thermoplastic rigid substrate required in the device.
