High strength and stiffness-to-weight ratio: Pultruded composites are strong and stiff, yet they are also lightweight.
Environmental requirements: Will the composite be exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as chemicals, salt water, or extreme temperatures?
Weight requirements: Is weight savings important for the application?

When concrete slabs expand or contract due to
temperature changes or traffic loads, dowel bars
placed across the transverse joints between slabs
help distribute the weight and reduce the risk of
cracking.
Glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) dowel bars
offer advantages over traditional steel or epoxy-
coated steel bars:
• Electromagnetic transparency: ideal for high-
speed toll roads to prevent interference
• Corrosion resistance: the GFRP material
will not rust or corrode in salt or alkaline
environments
• Light weight: less than one-third the weight
of steel
• Does not bond to concrete: eliminates
the need for sleeves or grease to allow for
expansion and contraction
Glasforms™ composite dowel bars are tested and
approved to meet the following requirements:
• ASTM 1356 Glass Transition Temperature
• ASTM D570 Water Absorption
• ASTM 2344 Short Beam Strength
• ASTM 7617 Transverse Shear Strength

A weighted closure’s sensation of heaviness and deep-pitched sound when set on a surface can shape a consumer’s perception of that product as high quality and premium.
The presence of weight in packaging can invoke those feelings of importance and seriousness that a luxury product should have.
Some manufacturers are choosing polymer-metal composites that provide the equivalent weight of metal, but also allow for the design freedom provided by thermoplastics.
