Abstract
High performance clear TPE products
are developed to replace silicone and PVC in
various medical and personnel care applications.
Styrene Block Copolymer (SBC) is a
TPE that combine the processing characteristic
of thermoplastics and physical properties of
vulcanized rubbers.
SBC
compound is thermoplastics and can be recycled,
which results in additional saving in processing
cost compared with thermset silicone.

Abstract
Overmolding thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) onto rigid thermoplastics has been an explosive trend
in the last decade.
Figure 1 shows the surface
energy match of various thermoplastic elastomers with rigid thermoplastics.

Continuous Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites
Want to learn more about the differences between thermosets and thermoplastics?
Continuous fiber reinforced thermoplastic composites are produced by pulling continuous glass rovings through thermoplastic resin to impregnate the fibers and form a unidirectional tape.

During development and prototyping, the engineers used an SBS-type elastomer for this critical component – but they hadn’t settled on materials for mass production.
The shell would be made with a custom-formulated Synprene™ thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) blend that provides resistance to most common medications and is flexible enough for the fins to work as designed.
Avient’s knowledge of materials, applied to our specific needs, gave us better consistency and quality,” says Andwin Scientific General Manager Ryan Smith.
