The engineers tested the material for shear resistance based on the thickness of the seal. They then modified the material to offer enough heat resistance so it could be overmolded onto polypropylene, the underlying material that provides the gaskets’ rigidity.  The material also can be used in tools originally constructed for halogenated materials with no rework required.
