– PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers today announced the launch of an overmolding technology based on Versaflex™ VDT thermoplastic elastomer (TPEs), developed for vibration and impact damping applications.
Customers familiar with our Versaflex VDT material have asked for an overmolding variation that allows them to leverage the design freedom of two-shot and insert injection molding,” said Charles Page, director, global marketing, PolyOne GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers.
Additionally, the PolyOne GLS material is more cost-effective than self-adhesive vibration damping tapes and avoids secondary operations.

The tub features a custom overmolded GLS Versaflex™ thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and non-toxic PolyOne OnColor™ colorants.
In addition, Karibu chose PolyOne’s non-toxic OnColor™ colorants, which are customizable and compatible with the GLS TPE material.
Karibu selected our TPE and colorants because they are superior to conventional products,” said Michelle Hearn, director of marketing for PolyOne GLS.

Properly designed deep undercuts are possible with GLS overmold TPEs.
Spiral flow testing results for GLS products are presented below using injection speeds of 3 in/sec and 5 in/sec.
Most GLS styrenic TPEs (Dynaflex and some Versaflex) have fairly high mold shrinkage and cause the overmolding TPE to contract more than the substrate, which can result in warpage or cupping of the substrate part.

To meet the manufacturer’s goals for the mouse grip, a clear TPE overmolding material, GLS Versaflex™, was formulated for improved ergonomics and comfort, strong chemical resistance, and excellent bonding to the ABS substrate.
A technical support team at Avient GLS Thermoplastic Elastomers conducted extensive compatibility testing to confirm proper bonding and overmolding onto the rigid substrate.
