When PET is processed for recycling, a yellowing of the material often occurs. Although the yellowing does not indicate impurities, the yellow hue is problematic as most manufacturers prefer clear PET flakes that produce a transparent or clear material for their containers and bottles. Similar to the ones that correct yellowing, there are special additives that “scavenge” or otherwise reduce the levels of acetaldehyde.
