Edgetek™ Toughened PPA Formulations
TECHNICAL BULLETIN
The Edgetek™ Toughened PPA series consists of
heat-stabilized, impact-modified polyphthalamide
(PPA) formulations with low moisture absorption.
The PPA-based formulations offer decreased
moisture absorption compared to nylon 66
(PA66), helping to improve durability and long-
term performance.
Leveraging Avient’s material science expertise, Edgetek Toughened PPA formulations can be customized using
various glass loading or impact modifier levels to meet specific application needs.

MEDICAL DEVICE DISINFECTION—HOW TO PREVENT
CRACKING AND CRAZING
Understanding polymer performance is key to minimizing
disinfectant-related failures
DISINFECTANT-RELATED DAMAGE
ON POLYMER HOUSINGS
Strong chemicals used to reduce hospital-
acquired infections can damage equipment
and result in material failures, such as:
• Stress cracking
• Crazing
• Discoloration
CHEMICAL RESISTANCE REQUIREMENTS
VARY BY ENVIRONMENT
• Patient/exam rooms
• Operating and radiology rooms
• Reception areas
• Home (patient equipment & devices)
Healthcare devices must perform flawlessly in a myriad of challenging environments and engineers must
be certain their devices can withstand increasingly potent disinfectants, which have begun to outstrip
the performance of traditional polymers.
When it comes to material selection and options, you need a strong partner that understands
both polymers and the demands of the healthcare environment.
An independent lab tested the following polymers with various disinfectants to help customers choose
the material suitable to their specific application requirements.

https://www.avient.com/sites/default/files/2022-08/Environmental Stress Cracking Resistance _ESCR_ Design Guide %281%29.pdf
ESC is defined as the premature embrittlement
and crack propagation of a polymer part.
Ideally, all polymer
contacting edges should be round or radiused.
Sharp edges on an insert can create sharp edges
on the polymer that result in a stress riser.
