NOVEL THERMOPLASTIC ELASTOMERS FOR UNIVERSAL OVERMOLDING ON DISSIMILAR THERMOPLASTICS Liang Xu, Sehyun Kim, Rajesh Varma and Krishna Venkataswamy GLS Corporation 833 Ridgeview Drive McHenry, IL 60050, USA Abstract Overmolding thermoplastic elastomers (TPEs) onto rigid thermoplastics has been an explosive trend in the last decade.
Recently, many TPEs have been uniquely developed to bond to specific substrate materials based on surface energy or polarity match between the elastomer and the thermoplastics.
Figure 1 shows the surface energy match of various thermoplastic elastomers with rigid thermoplastics.

To enhance the performance in the end use application and marketability of such consumer products the use of a thermoplastic elastomers as an overmold, onto the engineering plastic has continued to grow.
This is achieved by molding a soft skin of thermoplastic elastomer over a hard engineering plastic.
We have modified ASTM D903 method for plastics to evaluate the adhesion of soft TPE onto rigid thermoplastic.
